Meet our WA Bomber’s Treasurer Russell Ellen:
I joined the WA Bombers in 2016 after returning from living in Brisbane and previously Overseas.
I needed a new car with number plates.
Perth is the capital of private and personal number plates. More people per head of population than any other capital city own personal number plates.
I applied for a set of EFC number plates 30EFC8, My playing number at Essendon was 30 and my birthdate was the 8th.
I meet with the committee, our President Trevor Tann, was keen to get me involved. I offered to connect the Essendon Past Players to the WA Bombers and help with events when Essendon come to play in Perth.
So 10 years later l am still helping.
My short football story is:
Ruckman Russell Ellen was recruited by Essendon Football Club from Marnoo and commenced in the under 19s in 1971. He made his league debut in 1973 but struggled to hold down a regular spot in the team in light of the competition from Graham Moss and Simon Madden
and managed just 35 games in five seasons. In 1978 he crossed to West Perth and gave the club consistently solid service in 108 WANFL games over half a dozen seasons.
Always a disciplined and resolute footballer, some of his best games were played as a strong marking back pocket after the fashion of an illustrious predecessor in the Cardinals team, Bill Dempsey. In 1984, Ellen crossed to amateur club Wembley as coach, and
steered the side to that year’s WAAFL A Grade premiership. The 1985 season saw him back at Marnoo, but towards the end of the year he joined South Broken Hill. In 1986 he won the Broken Hill Football League’s best and fairest player award. He returned to Perth
in 1987 and played with South Perth and Wanneroo. Retired in 1988, wrote a book called “My Journey to the G” highlighting 450 senior games of football.
